The 2019 Artists in Residence Summer Series features weekly residences from local artists who will be on site to work on their creative projects, and visitors may go to the casemate to meet and interact with the artists, ask questions about their project, and observe how the artists go about their creative work.
This week's artists are Carla Weideman, a ceramic artist, and Katrina Slade, a visual artist.
Carla Weideman is a ceramic artist currently enrolled in the diploma program at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design. Her work has been featured at the 2018 and 2019 editions of NBCCD’s Art Expos, as well as the Depository Park at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery and the Text_Subtext exhibition at Connexion.
During her residency, Weideman will be creating a ceramic installation in exploration of New Brunswick's clearcut forests. Her project will examine the role that Acadian forests have in climate change mitigation, and the harm caused by the clear cutting and herbicide spraying by the New Brunswick logging industry.
Katrina Slade is a mixed-media painter who has taught and showcased her craft around the world, having participated in exhibitions and taught in countries such as Germany, France, South Korea, Japan, and the United States. She has been featured in The World of Interiors and Cascade Arts & Entertainment magazines and is a graduate of the ArtsLink NB Catapult Arts Accelerator Program.
During her residency, Slade will be creating a series of mixed-media paintings inspired by the dynamic aesthetic of trees when viewed at the microscopic level.
